![]() I bought at a pawn shop last spring is from 1985 and has real pretty wood. The good news for us Red Label lovers is there are still some new ones out there and lots of good buys on the older 'shooters.' The 12 ga. Some of the wood on the last new Red Labels I saw in gun stores was pretty bland, with some exceptions. I'm sure it was more readily available and lower priced. I think the older guns generally have better looking wood. Of course $400 was a lot more money back then. Ncg, that would have been late 70's not 80's but I get the idea. Unfortunately, the asking price of $400 was more than I could afford. Back in the late 80s, I was given the opportunity to buy a first year of production Red Label (20 gauge, of course, since the 12 didn't come until later) with the blued receiver and a walnut stock that made you drool. If anyone is kicking themselves for missing a great opportunity to get a Red Label, I probably have you beat. If I see one, first, though, it will probably be gone. Okay, having a little fun, here, but that is what sells. My guess (and it's not worth much ) is that any new Ruger shotgun will be some ugly, tacticool abomination with rails for every conceivable gadget known to the shooting world. ![]() On the other hand, tactical, CCW and SD seem to rule when it comes to sales. The bird hunting scene attracts fewer and fewer shooters every year (for various reasons) as evidenced in a continuing decline in the number of small game hunting licenses, nationwide, so the market for a sweet sporting O/U ain't what it used to be. ![]() There's been rumors floating around for a long, long time about another Ruger shotgun, but my crystal ball says it probably won't be the Red Label. There are other options if you're in the market for a good SS or OU, but if it's that Ruger on the gun that you want, you'll need to be keep looking. A 12 gauge is your best bet to get one at a good price. Expect the 20 gauges to be pricey, though and the 28s insanely so. Still some used ones around that can be had at that price, again. ![]() they just showed up one day at sportsmans warehouse, but before that you couldn't get one for love nor money (well, money maybe, but way more than the msrp). typical ruger- make something well, at a good price, and then hold it back or discontinue it. not the answer(s) i was hoping for, especially now that i've gone on youtube a bunch and seen videos of how purty they are. check the website, as those folks know and post first. I just called ruger about this (got a little incensed that i missed the whole red label window by a matter of months). ![]()
